Stop your older remote from controlling your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV (4th generation)

If you use an Apple Remote (aluminum or white) to control an earlier Apple TV or Mac in the same area as your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV (4th generation), your Apple Remote (aluminum or white) might control all your devices.

If you don't want your Apple Remote (aluminum or white) to work with your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV (4th generation), follow these steps:

  1. Point the Apple Remote (aluminum or white) at your Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) or Mac.
  2. Press and hold Menu and Left at the same time for six seconds.
  3. Unplug your Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) or Mac, so you don't disable the remote for that device.
  4. Point the Apple Remote (aluminum or white) at your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV (4th generation).
  5. Press and hold Menu and Right at the same time for six seconds.
  6. Press and hold Menu and Select at the same time until the LED starts flashing on your Apple TV.
  7. Try using the remote to control your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV (4th generation). If you can control the Apple TV, repeat steps 5 and 6.
  8. Plug in your other device and make sure that it works. Your remote should no longer control your Apple TV.

Even after you disable the remote, the LED will still flash on your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV (4th generation) when you use your remote with other devices.

Control your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV (4th generation) with your older remote again

If you want to use your Apple Remote (aluminum or white) with your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV (4th generation) again, you can set it up:

  1. Unplug any Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) or Mac in the area, so you don't disable the remote for that device.
  2. Point the Apple Remote (aluminum or white) at your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV (4th generation).
  3. Press and hold Menu and Left at the same time for six seconds.
  4. Try using the remote to control your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV (4th generation). If you can’t control it, repeat Step 3.
  5. Plug in your other device and make sure that it works with the remote.
