
Manage app usage with Classroom
You can manage app usage on a student’s devices, including opening, locking, and sharing information through various apps. Both you and the student must have the same apps on your devices.
Open an app on a student’s device
You can open an app for a student. To complete this task, both you and the student must have the same apps on your devices.
Open the Classroom app
on your iPad, then tap the student.
In the row of actions, tap Open
, then do one of the following:
Tap an app in the list.
Swipe down in the app list to reveal the Search bar; enter the name of the app, then tap the app.
You can also choose to open the app on your own device.

Lock an app open (iPad-only)
You can open an app on a student’s iPad and prevent the student from closing the app or opening any other app. To complete this task, both you and the student must have the same app on your devices.
Open the Classroom app
on your iPad, then tap the student.
In the row of actions, tap Open
, then do one of the following to open that app on the iPad of the selected student:
Scroll to locate the app in the list.
Swipe down in the app list to reveal the Search bar; enter the name of the app, then tap the app.
Turn on “Lock in app after opening,” then tap Done.
To lock an app open for more than one student, see Lock an app open (iPad-only).
Close a locked-open app (iPad-only)
If you turned on “Lock in app after opening,” you must follow these steps to turn it off. To complete this task, both you and the student must have the same app on your devices.
Open the Classroom app
on your iPad, then select the student who had “Lock in app after opening” turned on.
In the row of actions, tap Unlock
to turn off “Lock in app after opening.”
