If your AirPods won’t charge

If your AirPods won't charge, you can try connecting your AirPods to power, checking your cable connections and charge status, and resetting your AirPods.

Connect your AirPods to power

  • If you have AirPods or AirPods Pro, place your AirPods in the charging case and close the lid. Connect a Lightning cable or USB-C cable to your charging case, depending on your model of charging case. Charge your AirPods and case for at least 15 minutes.

  • If you have AirPods Max, charge them for at least 5 minutes using the cable that came with them. If you're not using your AirPods Max, put them in the Smart Case while charging to place them into ultra-low power mode. This can help preserve the battery charge.

  • If you have a Wireless Charging Case for your AirPods or AirPods Pro and you're using a Qi-compatible charger, place the case with the status light facing up. The status light should turn on for several seconds, then turn off while continuing to charge. If the light doesn't turn on, reposition the case. If your case still isn't charging, connect a compatible cable into the case and a USB power adapter, and plug the power adapter into a power source.

Check your cable connections

  • For AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max, make sure the charging cable is plugged firmly into the charging case and the USB power adapter, and that the power adapter is correctly plugged into a working power outlet.

  • If you have a Wireless Charging Case for your AirPods or AirPods Pro and you're using a Qi-compatible charger, plug the charging case directly into a power outlet.

Check the charge status

You can use your iPhone or iPad, your Mac, or your charging case to check the charge status of your AirPods.

You can also use your iPhone or iPad to turn off the Optimized Charge Limit on your AirPods Pro 3 and charge your AirPods fully.

Clean your charging case

Clean the charging case of your AirPods or your AirPods Pro to remove any debris from the charging port.

Reset your AirPods

When you reset your AirPods, any custom settings you've made for your AirPods also reset. You'll need to restore your custom settings after a full reset.
