Mac Studio (M5 Max or M5 Ultra) Combination Input/Output Board
Before You Begin
Warning
Read Mac Electrical Safety and follow workspace handling guidelines before you begin.
Remove the following parts before you begin:
Tools
Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)
ESD-safe tweezers
HDMI cable
Nylon probe (black stick)
Torx Plus 3IP 25 mm bit
Torx Plus 4IP 25 mm bit
Torx Plus 8IP 25 mm bit
Torx T6 70 mm bit
Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.
Removal
Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.
Use the adjustable torque driver and 3IP bit to remove two 3IP screws (923-12499) from the combination input/output (I/O) board connector cowling.
Remove the combination I/O board connector cowling and save it for reassembly.
Use the black stick to lift the ends of the USB-A and HDMI flex cables off the connectors.
Use the flat end of the black stick to flip up the locking lever on the power button flex cable.
Slide the end of the power button flex cable out of the connector.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to gently peel the power button flex cable off the side of the combination I/O board.
Use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP bit to remove one 8IP standoff screw (923-12501) from the logic board.
Note: This standoff screw supports the speaker.
Stand the computer on its back with the front ports facing up.
Use the adjustable torque driver and 4IP bit to remove two 4IP screws (923-12504) from the combination I/O board.
Use the adjustable torque driver and T6 bit to remove two 6IP screws (923-15357) from the combination I/O board and power cord port.
Lift the combination I/O board out of the housing.
Note: The USB-A and HDMI flex cables are still attached to the combination I/O board.
If you’re removing the combination I/O board as part of another repair, skip to reassembly step 5. If you’re installing a replacement combination I/O board, continue to step 13.
Position the existing combination I/O board on an ESD-safe surface with the ports facing up.
Use the adjustable torque driver and 3IP bit to remove two 3IP screws (923-12499) from the second combination I/O board connector cowling on the combination I/O board. Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.
Use the black stick to lift the ends of the USB-A and HDMI flex cables off their connectors. Save the flex cables for reassembly.
Reassembly
If you’re reinstalling the existing combination I/O board, skip to step 5. If you're installing a replacement combination I/O board, position it flat on an ESD-safe surface with the ports facing up.
Press the ends of the USB-A and HDMI flex cables to their connectors.
Position the second combination I/O board connector cowling over the connectors.
Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 15 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall two 3IP screws (923-12499) into the combination I/O board connector cowling.
Stand the computer on its back with the front ports facing up.
Position the combination I/O board in the housing.
Use the adjustable torque driver and T6 bit to partially reinstall two 6IP screws (923-15357) into the combination I/O board.
Note: The screws pass through screw holes in the combination I/O board and power cord port and thread into the housing.
Use the adjustable torque driver and 4IP bit to partially reinstall two 4IP screws (923-12504) into the combination I/O board.
Note: The screws pass through screw holes in the combination I/O board and thread into the housing.
Position the computer so the back ports face you.
Plug the HDMI cable into the HDMI port to ensure combination I/O board alignment. Adjust the alignment of the combination I/O board until the HDMI cable is easy to insert and remove.
Rotate the computer so the front ports face you.
Set the torque value on the adjustable torque driver to 10 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 4IP bit to fully reinstall two 4IP screws into the combination I/O board.
Set the torque value on the adjustable torque driver to 23 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and T6 bit to fully reinstall two 6IP screws into the combination I/O board. Remove the HDMI cable.
Set the torque value on the adjustable torque driver to 20 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP bit to reinstall one 8IP standoff screw (923-12501) into the logic board.
Slide the end of the power button flex cable into the connector (1). Then flip down the locking lever (2).
Use the flat end of a black stick to adhere the power button flex cable to the side of the combination I/O board.
Press the ends of the combination I/O board flex cables to their connectors.
Position the combination I/O board connector cowling over the ends of the USB-A and HDMI flex cables. Set the torque value on the adjustable torque driver to 15 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall two 3IP screws (923-12499) into the cowling.
