Mac Studio (M5 Max or M5 Ultra) SSD Modules

Before You Begin

Warning

Read Mac Electrical Safety and follow workspace handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • Adjustable torque wrench (2.5–25 Nm)

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torx T8 25 mm bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Caution

If you replace the SSD modules, you’ll need a separate Mac running the latest version of macOS to restore the Mac.

Important

  • SSD modules must be replaced in pairs except in devices with 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB configurations, which have single SSD modules.

  • This procedure shows the removal and reassembly of a single SSD module. However, the steps are the same for removing and reinstalling two SSD modules.

  • Only the right SSD module needs be removed before performing the front USB-C ports repair. The right SSD module is located directly next to the front USB-C ports.

  • This procedure requires a new polyester film SSD module cover (923-12516), which is included with a replacement SSD module but can also be ordered separately.

Caution

  • Ensure that you don’t switch the SSD modules. Each SSD module has a serial number ending in 00 or 01 that corresponds to its connector on the logic board.

  • SSD modules are specific to the Mac model. Ensure that you use an SSD module that correctly corresponds with the model.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

Important: Each SSD module has a serial number ending in 00 or 01 that corresponds to its connector on the logic board.

  1. Rotate the computer so the back ports are facing you.

  2. Use the flat end of the black stick to lift the corner of the polyester film cover from the SSD module as shown.

  3. Peel the polyester film cover from the connector on the logic board and discard the cover.

    • Important: A new polyester film cover for the SSD module is included with a replacement SSD module but can also be ordered separately.

  4. If there's another cover on the SSD module in the location shown, use a black stick to lift the edge of the cover and use ESD-safe tweezers to remove it. If there's no cover in the location shown, proceed to step 5.

    • Caution: Be careful not to damage the SSD module when removing the cover.

  5. Use the adjustable torque wrench and T8 bit to remove one T8 screw (923-12514) from the SSD module.

  6. Grasp the sides of the SSD module and firmly pull it from the SSD module connector.

    • Caution: Don’t tilt or lift the SSD module when removing it from the SSD module connector.

Reassembly

Important

  • If you’re reinstalling the existing SSD module, skip to step 2.

  • If you're installing a replacement SSD module, complete all reassembly steps.

  1. Peel the temporary regulatory label off the back of the replacement SSD module before installing the module.

  2. Identify the corresponding SSD module connector for the SSD module.

    • Caution: Ensure that you don’t switch the SSD modules. Each SSD module has a serial number ending in 00 or 01 that corresponds to its connector on the logic board.

  3. Holding the sides of the SSD module, align the pins with the connector. Then firmly slide the SSD module into the connector.

    • Caution: Ensure that the SSD module remains level when inserting it into the SSD module connector.

  4. Set the torque value on the 2.5–25 Nm adjustable torque wrench to 5 Nm. Then use the adjustable torque wrench and T8 bit to reinstall one T8 screw (923-12514).

  5. Peel a replacement polyester film SSD module cover from the adhesive backing.

    • Note: A handle (1) is attached to the cover (2).

  6. Holding the polyester film cover by the handle, position the cover over the SSD module as shown. Then use the flat end of the black stick to adhere the cover to the SSD module.

    • Important: Ensure that the two short tabs and one long tab are aligned with the edges of the SSD module connector as shown.

  7. Tilt down the handle of the polyester film cover (1). Then slide the handle toward the SSD module connector (2) to release the handle from the cover.

  8. Use the flat end of the black stick to fold the three polyester film cover tabs over the sides of the SSD module connector. Then press the tabs to adhere them to the sides of the connector.

Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:

Caution

If you replaced the SSD modules, the computer won’t start up and the status indicator light will flash amber. Follow the instructions to restore the Mac.
