Relevant support articles

If the issue wasn’t resolved by following a support article, continue to the next section.

Try quick troubleshooting steps

  1. Remove any cases or screen protectors. Touch the screen with your finger pads, not your fingernails.

  2. Clean the display with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. If needed, clean the entire iPhone.

    • Important: Unplug all cables and turn off the iPhone first. Don’t use products containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Avoid getting moisture in any openings and don’t submerge the iPhone in any cleaning agents. Don’t use compressed air.

  3. Determine whether the issue is related to Multi-Touch and not the hardware. Check the Clock app icon. If the second hand isn’t moving, the device might be unresponsive. If so, troubleshoot as a system startup or stability issue.

  4. Rotate and test the iPhone display in all four directions. Ensure that the displays rotate properly while oriented each way.

Run manual and diagnostic tests

If the issue wasn’t resolved by following a support article or trying the quick troubleshooting steps, run these manual and diagnostic tests to help isolate the cause of the issue:

  1. Run the Mobile Resource Inspector (MRI) diagnostic suite.

  2. For blank or black screen issues, try these steps:

    1. Restart the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn’t restart, try to force restart the iPhone.

    2. Plug the device into a 10W or 12W Apple power adapter that’s connected to AC power using a compatible charging cable.

    3. Wait until an image appears on any screen or for up to 10 minutes, whichever comes first. If the device has no power and doesn’t turn on after completing the previous steps, the device may have a power issue. Follow troubleshooting steps in Troubleshooting battery, charging, and power issues.

    4. If an image appears on any screen after charging, the device may have a charging issue. Follow troubleshooting steps in Troubleshooting battery, charging, and power issues.

  3. Attempt to put the iPhone into recovery mode. If an image appears in recovery mode, connect the device using a known-good cable to a known-good computer running the latest version of macOS. If the device is recognized by the computer, the device has power. Restore the device if prompted. Continue troubleshooting only if the device can display an image.

  4. For image quality issues, try these steps:

    1. Run the Display Anomalies diagnostic suite.

    2. Try rotating the device. Notice whether the issue is caused by media, software, or the display.

    3. Follow steps in Adjust the brightness and color temperature on your iPhone or iPad to turn Auto-Brightness off, then on again. Then adjust the brightness level. Recheck the device to find out whether this step resolved the issue. Changing this setting resets the ambient light sensor.

    4. Night Shift is a software feature that gradually shifts the white balance to the warmer end of the spectrum (slightly redder, less bluish hues). If you encounter white balance issues, refer to Use Night Shift on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

    5. iPhone Duo supports True Tone, which uses advanced sensors to adjust the color and intensity of the display to match the ambient light. This adjustment can be mistaken as a service issue. Refer to Adjust the brightness and color temperature on your iPhone or iPad for more information about using brightness settings and True Tone.

    6. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display and Text Size and verify that Reduce White Point and Color Filters are turned off. If these settings are turned on, the altered screen image might seem like a display issue.

  5. For Multi-Touch issues, run the Multi-Touch diagnostic suite.

Open and inspect the iPhone

If the issue wasn’t resolved or isolated by following support articles or running diagnostic tests, refer to the iPhone repair manual to open and inspect the iPhone. A damaged or out-of-place part may be causing one of the issues.

  1. Follow repair manual procedures to open the device.

  2. Disconnect the group of flex cables connecting the affected display to the logic board.

  3. Examine each connector for signs of damage or debris.

  4. If display flex connectors appear normal and not damaged, reconnect the group of flex cables.

  5. Reassemble by installing any removed parts and closing the device.

  6. Retest the device display.

Replace the part

If the issue wasn’t resolved or isolated by following the previous steps, replace the following parts:

  • For outer display issues, including Multi-Touch issues, replace the outer display.

  • For inner display issues, including Multi-Touch issues, replace the inner display.

After the repair is completed, turn on the device and verify that all displays are functional.
