About Schoolwork classes, Handouts, and files
Schoolwork automatically populates the sidebar with all your classes and, depending on the view you select, displays Handouts associated with a specific class or all your active Handouts. Handouts provide a way for your teachers to share information or homework activities with you. For example, your teacher might send you and your entire class a Handout with instructions to watch an attached movie, submit an essay, or complete a task in an app that provides student progress. For each of your classes, Schoolwork automatically creates a class folder within the Schoolwork folder in iCloud Drive.
If no classes appear in the sidebar or if you want to change any of your student information, contact your teacher.
Note: You can view the status of Schoolwork at the bottom of the sidebar and swipe down in the sidebar or a Handout list to update Schoolwork content and the status messages.
Your classes
Use the class views to focus on a specific class, and all Handouts associated with the class. Class views display active, submitted, and completed Handouts associated with the selected class.

Your Handouts
Use the Recents view to see all active Handouts across all your classes. The Recents view displays all your active Handouts, with the Handouts your teachers recently updated listed first.

Your files
For each of your classes, Schoolwork automatically creates a class folder within the Schoolwork folder in iCloud Drive.
In the Files app
, tap Browse, tap iCloud Drive, then tap Schoolwork.
Schoolwork automatically organizes Handout files within your Schoolwork class folder in iCloud Drive. When a teacher shares a file in a Handout, Schoolwork automatically saves the file in a [handout name] folder within your Schoolwork class folder using the following format to name files: [family name given name - original filename.ext]. For example, if your name is Johnny Appleseed and your teacher shares a PDF file, Fractions Worksheet, in the Adding Fractions Handout in your Math class with you, Schoolwork names the file Appleseed Johnny - Fractions Worksheet.pdf. The file is stored in a folder with the same name as the Handout, Adding Fractions, within the Math folder in the Schoolwork folder.
Schoolwork > Math > Adding Fractions > Appleseed Johnny - Fractions Worksheet.pdfIn addition, every student and any other teacher receiving the Handout also see the Fractions Worksheet file in their Adding Fractions Handout folder in their Math class folder.
Sharing files
When your teacher shares a file using “Each student can edit their own file” or when you submit work to a Handout, Schoolwork saves the file in your [handout name] folder within your Schoolwork class folder, and saves a copy to your teacher’s [handout name] folder. Schoolwork also saves a copy in the [handout name] folder for any other teacher receiving the Handout. Schoolwork names the files:
[family name given name - original filename.ext] (for a file your teacher shared using “Each student can edit their own file”)
[family name given name - YYYYMMDD - activity name.ext] (for a file you submitted to a Handout)
When editing a shared file, confirm all your changes are saved. Schoolwork might overwrite changes if another student or teacher edits a file your teacher shared with you and other students at the same time you edit the file.
Deleting files
Schoolwork doesn’t automatically delete files from iCloud Drive when your teacher deletes a Handout. Instead, Schoolwork allows you to decide when you want to remove your work. Be aware that when you remove a file in iCloud Drive, Schoolwork can’t access or recover the file.
