Manage upgrading to macOS Ventura in your organization

Use mobile device management to delay macOS Ventura from being offered on supervised Mac computers in your organization.

This article is intended for system administrators.

New with macOS Monterey 12.3 and later, a user can be offered a new software upgrade path to macOS Ventura without the need to run a larger full installer app or authenticate as an administrator. macOS Monterey 12.6.1 and later can defer this new upgrade path using the major update delay MDM setting.

To give managed deployments more time to update to macOS Monterey 12.6.1, the new upgrade path for macOS Ventura 13.0 and 13.0.1 is disabled for any supervised Mac computer that's enrolled in mobile device management, and only the full installer path is available. The new upgrade path is offered only to supervised Mac computers for macOS Ventura 13.1 and later.

Use the instructions below to prevent Mac computers in your organization from offering macOS Ventura.

Use MDM to delay macOS Ventura 13.0 and 13.0.1

Use the major update delay setting to prevent Mac computers in your organization from offering the full installer upgrade path to macOS Ventura.

Use MDM to delay macOS Ventura 13.1 and later

macOS Monterey 12.6.1 and later:

Continue to use the major update delay setting to prevent Mac computers in your organization from offering macOS Ventura for up to 90 days.

macOS Monterey 12.3 through 12.6:

Continue to use the major update delay setting to prevent Mac computers in your organization from offering macOS Ventura 13.0 and 13.0.1 for up to 90 days. Use both the major and minor update delay settings to prevent Mac computers in your organization from offering macOS Ventura 13.1 and later for up to 90 days. If you currently have a longer delay period for major updates than minor updates, increase your minor update delay to match the desired major delay period.
