Symptoms

When installing iTunes for Windows, the installation may not complete and Windows may display the following message: "iTunesSetup.exe is not a valid Win32 application."

Products Affected

iTunes, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000

Resolution

In some cases, downloading iTunes using a different web browser may resolve this issue.  If you do not have another web browser and use Internet Explorer, follow these steps to remove temporary Internet files which may be preventing the iTunes installer from downloading properly:

  1. Remove all copies of iTunesSetup.exe from this computer.
  2. Open Internet Explorer.
  3. Chose Tools > Delete Browsing History.

  4. In the "Temporary Internet Files" section of the resulting window, click Delete files.
  5. Click Yes.
  6. Click Close.
  7. Quit Internet Explorer and open it.
  8. Download and install iTunes again.

If the issue persists, try the following steps:

  1. Locate and remove all copies of QuickTimeInstaller.exe and iTunesSetup.exe that have been downloaded.
  2. Download the latest version of QuickTime without iTunes first. Make sure you can open QuickTime Player before moving on to the next step.
  3. Download the latest version of iTunesImportant: When prompted if you want to run or save iTunesSetup.exe, click Run.

Additional Information

For additional information on troubleshooting iTunes installation see Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime software in Windows.

If you have the correct  system requirements for installing iTunes, this message may indicate that the installer file was damaged during download, or the download was not complete. This can be caused by having a pop-up blocker turned on. Before downloading iTunes again, turn off any pop-up blockers (the built-in pop-up blocker settings in Internet Explorer are in Internet Options under the Privacy tab).
