Genius playlists

You can create Genius playlists in iTunes with preset limits of 25, 50, 75, or 100 songs. When you save Genius playlists and sync them to your iPod or iPhone, they contain the same songs that were present in the playlist on your computer.

Genius playlists that you create or refresh on iPod or iPhone are automatically set to a 25 song limit. When you refresh or create a Genius playlist on your device, the changes made will automatically sync to iTunes if the device is set to sync music automatically. Creating and editing Genius playlists is available on these devices:

  • iPod touch1
  • iPod touch (2nd generation)1
  • iPod touch (3rd generation)
  • iPod touch (4th generation)
  • iPod touch (5th generation)
  • iPhone1
  • iPhone 3G1
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 5
  • iPod nano (4th generation)
  • iPod nano (5th generation)
  • iPod nano (6th generation)
  • iPod nano (7th generation)
  • iPod classic (120 GB)
  • iPod classic (Late 2009)

Sometimes if you sync a portion of your iTunes library to iPod or iPhone, you may be unable to create a Genius playlist with certain songs while using your device. You may see one of the following messages:

  • "This song does not have enough related songs to create a Genius Playlist."
  • "Genius is unavailable for the selected song."

If this happens, try making a Genius playlist with those songs on your computer. If you can make a Genius playlist in iTunes on your computer, then it is likely that there are not enough songs on your iPod or iPhone that go great with the desired songs. Try syncing more of your iTunes library with your device. If you are still unable to make Genius playlists from those songs, consider making Genius playlists in iTunes first, then syncing them to your iPod or iPhone.

Genius Mixes

Genius Mixes are groups of songs, based on genres, that play continuously like a radio station. Genius Mixes are created automatically when using Genius with iTunes 9 or later, and appear with your Genius playlists.2

Genius mixes cannot be synced to your device manually. To sync Genius Mixes to your device, select the device in iTunes, click the Music tab, and select the Genius Mixes you wish to sync in the Playlists section.

Genius for Apps

Genius for Apps is a fantastic new feature that will help you discover apps in the App Store on your iPhone or iPod touch. Genius for Apps makes recommendations based on apps that you've downloaded. To use Genius for Apps you must have iOS 3.1 or later installed on your device.

Genius for Apps is able to give you great recommendations by periodically sending information about the apps on your device to Apple. This information will only be sent to Apple if you choose to turn on Genius for Apps. This information will be stored with an anonymous Genius ID not linked to your iTunes Account. Apple will also use your App Store purchase history to give you better recommendations. The information about your apps will be anonymously combined with information provided by other Genius for Apps users. Apple will use this combined knowledge to improve Genius for Apps recommendations for everyone.

To enable Genius for Apps on your iPhone or iPod touch:

  1. Tap App Store.
  2. Tap the Featured pane at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap the Genius tab near the top of the screen.
  4. Tap Turn on Genius.

You will be asked to agree to the terms and conditions. After you agree, Genius for Apps will be enabled.

If you would like to use Genius for Apps on more than one device, you must turn on Genius for Apps from each. You can turn off Genius for Apps from the Account page in the App Store. To get to the Account page, scroll to the bottom of the App Store screen and tap the button with your account name on it. Once you turn off Genius for Apps, the App Store will no longer send information about the apps on your device to Apple. If you used Genius for Apps on more than one device, you must turn off Genius for Apps from each device.
