iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one

This article explains how to use iTunes 7.0 or later to choose a new or different iTunes Library. You can use this to verify or isolate issues or to easily choose different libraries.

Create or choose a different iTunes Library file

  1. If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
  2. If you're using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu, choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
  3. If you're using a Mac, open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option key.
  4. You should see one of these screens:
"Choose iTunes Library" screen for Windows

"Choose iTunes Library" screen for Mac

If you don't see one of the screens above, you may want to try again. Remember to hold down the Option key if you're using a Mac or the Shift key if you're using Windows.
