Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC

By authorizing or deauthorizing your Mac or PC, you can change which computers can sync or use your apps, audiobooks, books, music, movies, and other content. If your computer isn't working or you don't have it anymore, you can still deauthorize it using the steps below.

Authorize a Mac or PC

When you authorize your computer, you're giving it permission to play content you purchase from the iTunes Store. You must authorize your computer to play protected iTunes Store content, such as movies or TV Shows. You can authorize up to 5 computers with your Apple ID. That means you can play the content you purchased with that Apple ID on up to 5 computers. If you've authorized more than 2 computers, you can see how many you've authorized in iTunes but not the names of those computers. You don't need to authorize your iOS devices, and they don't use your available authorizations. 

To authorize a computer, follow these steps:

  1. Open iTunes on the computer you want to authorize.
  2. Choose Store > Authorize This Computer from the menu bar.
    You may need to show the menu bar to see this option in Windows. In earlier versions of iTunes, you can access this option from the Advanced menu.

    Select Authorize This Computer

  3. Enter your Apple ID and click Authorize.
    If your Apple ID uses an expired MobileMe account, you can still authorize your computer.

If iTunes asks you to authorize your computer again, it shouldn't count as a new authorization. You won’t have to use a second authorization for the same computer.

Deauthorize a single Mac or PC

When you deauthorize a computer, you’re removing the ability to play content that you bought from iTunes. You won’t lose your content, and nothing will be deleted. And it’s easy to authorize your computer again later—just follow the steps to authorize a Mac or PC.

If you don’t have access to your computer anymore, you need to deauthorize all computers, then authorize the ones you’re still using.

Here's when you should deauthorize a single computer:

  • Before you sell or give away your computer
  • Before you send your computer in for service
  • Before you reinstall Windows
  • Before you upgrade your RAM, hard disk, or other system components. Otherwise, the computer may use multiple authorizations.

To deauthorize a computer, follow these steps:

  1. Open iTunes on the computer you want to deauthorize.
    If you don’t have your computer, see the steps below to deauthorize all computers.
  2. Choose Store > Deauthorize This Computer from the menu bar.
    You may need to show the menu bar to see this options in Windows. In earlier versions of iTunes, you can access this option from the Advanced menu.

    Select Deauthorize This Computer

  3. Enter your Apple ID and click Deauthorize.

Deauthorize all computers

After you authorize two computers, you'll have the option to deauthorize all computers for your Apple ID. You can deauthorize all computers once a year.

Just like deauthorizing a single computer, you won’t delete anything if you choose to deauthorize all computers. You just won’t be able to play content that you bought from iTunes on those computers. After you deauthorize all, you can easily authorize computers again one by one. Just follow the steps to authorize a Mac or PC.

Here's when you should deauthorize all your computers:

  • If a computer doesn't work anymore
  • If you don't have one of your computers
  • If you used 5 authorizations and want to authorize a new computer

To deauthorize all your computers, follow these steps using one of your authorized computers:

  1. Click to open your account in iTunes (you may need to sign in with your Apple ID), or follow these steps:
    1. Open iTunes and click iTunes Store.
    2. Click Sign In and enter your Apple ID.
    3. Click your Apple ID and select Account.
  2. Click Deauthorize All.

    The Deauthorize All button appears only if you have more than two authorized computers.

If you no longer have, or access to, the computer(s) you want to deauthorise, Log in to iTunes,  go to "view your account info" on the itunes store, deauthorise all five, (Please Note: this can only be done Once every 12 months)  and then re-authorize your current Computer(s) one at a time.
