iTunes: How to reset the Lockdown folder

Symptoms

If you can't sync, back up, or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you may be instructed to reset the Lockdown folder on your Mac or Windows PC.

Resolution

Before doing these steps, unplug all iOS devices from your computer and quit iTunes.

Mac OS X

  1. From the Finder, choose Go > Go to folder.
  2. Type /var/db/lockdown and press Return.
  3. Choose View > as Icons. The Finder window should show one or more files with alphanumeric file names.
  4. In the Finder, choose Edit > Select all.
  5. Choose File > Move to Trash. You may need to enter an administrator password.
    Note: Delete the files in the Lockdown folder; don't delete the Lockdown folder.

Windows 8

  1. Click the magnifying glass.
  2. Type %ProgramData% and press Return.
  3. Double-click the Apple folder.
  4. Right-click the Lockdown folder and choose Delete.

Windows Vista or Windows 7

  1. Choose Start, type %ProgramData% in the search bar, and press Return.
  2. Double-click the Apple folder.
  3. Right-click the Lockdown folder and choose Delete.

Windows XP

  1. Choose Start > Run.
  2. Type %AllUsersProfile% and click Run.
  3. Double-click the Application Data folder.
  4. Double-click the Apple folder.
  5. Right-click the Lockdown folder and choose Delete.
