iOS: Push email service currently unavailable for iCloud, Yahoo!, AOL, QQ, and NetEase users located within the borders of Germany

Products Affected

iCloud, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch

Symptoms

Because of a lawsuit by Motorola, Apple has been forced to deactivate push email delivery for iCloud, Yahoo!, AOL, QQ and NetEase in Germany. We are working on an alternative approach for re-enabling push email delivery for Yahoo!, AOL, QQ and NetEase in a future software update.

Affected customers will still receive iCloud, Yahoo!, AOL, QQ, and NetEase email, but new messages will be downloaded to their devices when the Mail app is opened, or when their device periodically fetches new messages as configured in iOS Settings. Push email service on desktop computers, laptop computers, and the web is unaffected, as is service from other providers such as Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.

Resolution

If you are located inside Germany, and your iCloud, Yahoo!, AOL, QQ, and NetEase push email delivery has been disabled, you can still configure your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to automatically download new mail in the background by following these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  2. Tap Fetch New Data.
  3. Select a time interval for Fetch.
  4. Push can remain turned on to continue push service for Contacts and Calendars.

With these settings, your iCloud, Yahoo!, AOL, QQ, and NetEase Mail accounts will fetch new messages at your set interval while you are inside Germany. Push email service will continue to be available outside of Germany. There may be a lag of several days before the re-activation of push email service after departure from Germany.
