iCloud: Get help using My Photo Stream

Symptoms

Find your issue below and try the steps to resolve it. If you need to, you can also get help using iCloud Photo Sharing and Shared Photo Streams.

Resolution

I imported photos to iPhoto or Aperture from my camera, but I don't see them uploaded to the My Photo Stream album and the service is enabled.

  1. In iPhoto or Aperture, go to Preferences > iCloud (or Photo Stream).
  2. Under My Photo Stream, see if Automatic Upload is on. If Automatic Upload isn't on, you can either turn it on and import again, or add the newly imported photos to My Photo Stream in iPhoto or Aperture by dragging them into the My Photo Stream album in your Library.
  3. Make sure that you have an active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. You can use these steps to troubleshoot your Internet connection on your Mac.

I don't see photos in My Photo Stream on my iOS device.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Make sure that Wi-Fi is on and your device is connected to a wireless network. You can use these steps to troubleshoot your Internet connection on your iOS device.
  3. From your Home screen, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos (or Photo Stream on a device using iOS 6).
  4. Make sure that My Photo Stream is on.
  5. Close the Camera app on the device that took the photo. Photos won't upload from an iOS device to My Photo Stream until you close the Camera app.
  6. See if your iOS device is below 20% battery power. To preserve battery life, Photo Stream downloading and uploading are disabled when the battery reaches 20%. Downloading and uploading will continue after you charge your device, and the battery charge is greater than 20%.

Due to storage limitations, your Apple TV might display only your most recent photos.

I don't see any photos in the My Photo Stream view of iPhoto or Aperture.

  1. Make sure your Mac has an active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. If you can't connect to the Internet, updates to My Photo Stream won't appear in iPhoto or Aperture. You can use these steps to troubleshoot your Internet connection on your Mac.
  2. From your Mac, choose System Preferences > iCloud.
  3. Make sure that the Photo Stream checkbox is selected and you're signed in to the same iCloud account that you're using on your other supported devices.
  4. Open iPhoto or Aperture, then choose Preferences > iCloud (or Photo Stream).
    • If you're using iPhoto 9.4 or later or Aperture 3.4 or later, make sure that My Photo Stream is selected. If you want all new photos that you upload to your iPhoto or Aperture library to upload to My Photo Stream, select Automatic Upload.
    • If you're using iPhoto 9.2.2 through 9.3.2, or Aperture 3.2.3 through 3.3.2, select Enable Photo Stream and Automatic Import.

I see different photos in My Photo Stream on each of my devices.

Your device will keep up to 1000 photos, even if they're older than 30 days. Photos older than 30 days are removed from the iCloud server, so your devices might not have the same photos, depending on when you enabled My Photo Stream. Due to storage limitations, your Apple TV might display only your most recent photos.

If you want to have the most current photos in My Photo Stream on each of your devices and delete the older photos:

  1. If there are any photos in My Photo Stream that you want to keep, save them to your Camera Roll, then back up your Camera Roll and other data using iCloud or iTunes.
  2. Turn My Photo Stream off in Settings > iCloud > Photos (or Photo Stream in iOS 6).
  3. Confirm that you wish to Delete Photos.
  4. Turn My Photo Stream back on. iCloud will automatically push your stored photos to your device.
  5. Repeat these steps for each device.

I installed or updated iCloud Control Panel for Windows and signed in, but when I go to iCloud Photos (or Photo Stream in iCloud Control Panel 2.x), I see a message that says I'm not signed in.

If you see either of these messages and you're already signed in, you need to apply your settings:

  • iCloud Control Panel 3.0: "iCloud Photos is not enabled. Open iCloud Control Panel."
  • iCloud Control Panel 2.x: "Photo Stream is not enabled. Sign into iCloud to view Photo Stream."

To apply your settings in Windows 8.1:

  1. Close the Windows Explorer window that has the message.
  2. Go to the Start screen, click the down arrow Down arrow in the lower-left corner, then click the iCloud app.
  3. Select Photos.
  4. Next to Photos, click Options.
  5. Select My Photo Stream. If you want to share certain photos, select Photo Sharing as well.
  6. Click OK, then click Apply.
  7. Return to iCloud Photos.

To apply your settings in Windows 8:

  1. Close the Windows Explorer window that has the message.
  2. Go to the Start screen, then click the iCloud tile.
  3. Select Photos (or Photo Stream in iCloud Control Panel 2.0 through 2.1.2).
  4. Next to Photos, click Options.
  5. Select My Photo Stream. If you want to share certain photos, also select Photo Sharing (or Shared Photo Streams in iCloud Control Panel 2.0 through 2.1.2).
  6. Click OK, then click Apply.
  7. Return to iCloud Photos (or Photo Stream).

To apply your settings in Windows 7:

  1. Close the Windows Explorer window that has the message.
  2. Choose Start menu > All Programs > iCloud > iCloud.
  3. Select Photos (or Photo Stream in iCloud Control Panel 2.0 through 2.1.2).
  4. Next to Photos, click Options.
  5. Select My Photo Stream. If you want to share certain photos, also select Photo Sharing (or Shared Photo Streams in iCloud Control Panel 2.0 through 2.1.2).
  6. Click OK, then click Apply.
  7. Return to iCloud Photos (or Photo Stream).

I added some photos to My Photo Stream on my Windows PC, but they don't appear in My Photo Stream on any of my devices.

  1. To see if your computer and other devices are online, try to view www.apple.com. If you can't connect to the Internet, iCloud Photos can't send or receive updates to My Photo Stream. You might need to troubleshoot your Internet connection on your PC, Mac, or iOS devices.
  2. Open the iCloud Control Panel and make sure that you're signed in to the same iCloud account that you're using on your other supported devices.
    • In Windows 8.1, go to the Start screen, click the down arrow Down arrow in the lower-left corner, then click the iCloud app.
    • In Windows 8, go to the Start screen, and click the iCloud tile.
    • In Windows 7, choose Start menu > All Programs > iCloud > iCloud.
  3. Click the Options button and make sure that My Photo Stream is turned on.
  4. Close and reopen the iCloud Control Panel.
  5. Restart your computer.

Make sure that you used one of the methods below to add photos to My Photo Stream with iCloud Control Panel on your Windows PC:

  • Add the photos using the Add Photos button in iCloud Photos (or Photo Stream).
    1. Open a File Explorer window (Windows 8 or 8.1) or Windows Explorer window (Windows 7).
    2. Under the Favorites menu, click iCloud Photos (or Photo Stream).
    3. Double-click My Photo Stream.
    4. Click Add photos.
    5. Select the photos that you'd like to add and click OK.
  • Or you can copy photos from a folder to the iCloud Photos (or Photo Stream) Uploads folder.
    1. Confirm the location of your Uploads folder.
    2. Open iCloud Control Panel.
      • In Windows 8.1, go to the Start screen, click the down arrow Down arrow in the lower-left corner, then click the iCloud app.
      • In Windows 8, go to the Start screen, then click the iCloud tile.
      • In Windows 7, choose Start menu > All Programs > iCloud > iCloud.
    3. Click the Options button next to iCloud Photos (or Photo Stream).
    4. Open a File Explorer window (Windows 8 or 8.1) or Windows Explorer window (Windows 7).
    5. Go to the iCloud Photos folder location listed in the iCloud Control Panel.
    6. Open the Uploads folder.
    7. Open the folder that contains the photos that you want to add to My Photo Stream.
    8. Copy them into the Uploads folder.
