OS X Lion: Application icon has a prohibitory sign, or "PowerPC applications are no longer supported" appears

Symptoms
- Attempting to open a PowerPC-based application results in the alert:
"You can't open the application (name of application) because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
- Also, PowerPC-based applications display a white prohibitory sign over their icon in the Finder.
Resolution
Contact the manufacturer for an updated version of the software that is compatible with OS X Lion.
Additional Information
Some applications, such as Microsoft Office 2004, DivX, and Quicken, may not be compatible with OS X Lion.
