Mac Pro (Mid 2010): Kernel panic when installing or restarting Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac

Symptoms

Certain Mac Pro (Mid 2010) configurations may exhibit a kernel panic or otherwise appear unresponsive after you install Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac virtualization software or after you restart the computer.  You may also experience a kernel panic using the Parallels virtualization engine in 32-bit mode.  

Resolution

Install the Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac, Build 9376 software update using the Parallels Desktop in-product updater or by visiting Parallels website and choosing the Download menu.  

To open the in-product update, choose Check for Updates from the Help menu of Parallels Desktop for Mac, then follow the onscreen instructions.

You should also install the available updates for the operating systems running on each of your virtual machines.
