iOS 4: Unable to configure a repeating event for an Exchange account

Symptoms

When using iOS 4 or later, the following alert may appear before configuring the Repeat option for an Exchange calendar event:

"For this repeating event, one event cannot take place after the alert of a later event."

Resolution

Update your device to iOS 4.1 or later.
