Archived - iMovie '09: MPEG-4 clips in some camcorders may not be accessible from the Import window

This article has been archived and is no longer updated by Apple.

Some camcorders can capture video footage in both the MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 formats. If your camcorder has captured video footage in both formats, iMovie may only recognize the MPEG-2 movies when accessing the footage from the Camera Import window. MPEG-4 movies recorded with these devices may not be shown.

You can Import your MPEG-4 captured video footage into iMovie ’09 by following these steps:

  1. In iMovie, Choose File > Import > Movies.
  2. In the window that opens, navigate to your camcorder's mounted disk image on your desktop.
  3. Search for the MPEG-4 (the files will end in ".MP4") movies you wish to import and then click the Import button.

Note: Captured video footage in hybrid camcorders vary in where they are saved based on several variables, such as the camcorder's brand type. If you are unable to locate the MPEG-4 files, consult your camcorder's user manual or manufacturer for more information on where footage is saved.

Additional Information

iMovie '11 (version 9.0.1 and later) allows you to import from multiple formats using Camera Import.
