Final Cut Studio (2009), Color 1.5: Anamorphic SD media appears distorted on an external monitor

Symptoms

Anamorphic SD media (PAL and NTSC) appears letterboxed (horizontal black bars at the top and bottom of the frame) and vertically squeezed via external video output.

Resolution

There are two ways to address this issue:

  1. Set your external video output to HD resolution (720 or 1080).

    2. or

  2. Prior to sending the Anamorphic Sequence from Final Cut Pro to Color, open the Sequence and choose Sequence > Settings. Then, deselect the "Anamorphic 16:9" checkbox in Sequence Settings  and then set video output to display as anamorphic SD.

After rendering and sending back to Final Cut Pro, choose Sequence > Settings, and then select the Anamorphic 16:9 checkbox in Sequence Settings.
