MobileMe: Troubleshooting the Gallery app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Products Affected
MobileMe Gallery, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch
Symptoms
You can view your MobileMe Gallery and quickly access your friends' galleries with the Gallery app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. For help using the Gallery app, open the app, tap Settings in the upper-left corner, and then tap Gallery Help.
If you encounter issues while using the Gallery app, the steps below can help you troubleshoot further. Using Gallery app version 1.2 or later is recommended for all MobileMe Gallery app users.
Resolution
Unable to install
The Gallery app requires iOS 3.1.3 or later. If you are unable to download the app successfully on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can download it directly from the App Store in iTunes 9.2 or later and sync it to your device. For more information about the App Store, refer to the App Store Frequently Asked Questions page.
Unable to log in
- When you log in to your MobileMe Gallery app, enter your MobileMe membername and password exactly as you would in the MobileMe preferences (Mac OS X), MobileMe Control Panel (Windows), and me.com. If you are unable to log in to the MobileMe Gallery app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to me.com on your computer and try logging in there. If you are unable to log in to the MobileMe website, visit the MobileMe Account Help page for more information.
- Make sure the date and time on your device is correct. To check this from the Home screen, tap Settings > General > Date & Time.
- When entering your member name, make sure you enter it in all lowercase letters.
Unable to view files
- The Gallery app can view files that are supported by the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Supported files and formats are listed on the iPhone Technical Specifications page & iPad Technical Specfications page.
- Viewing galleries or albums for the first time, or viewing any content that has changed recently, requires an Internet connection on your device. Open Safari on your device and make sure you are connected to the Internet (test by trying to open http://www.apple.com). If you are unable to connect to the Internet on your device, visit the iPhone support page for Internet connections.
- Make sure the date and time on your device is correct. To check this from the Home screen, tap Settings > General > Date & Time.
Following a link in an email to MobileMe Gallery doesn't work using iOS 4 device and Safari
- Double-press the Home button on the iOS 4 device.
- Find Safari in the multi-tasking list.
- Tap Safari and hold.
- Delete Safari from the multi-tasking list.
- Try following the link from the email again.
Unable to view friends' Galleries without logging in to the Gallery app
Using the Gallery app without a MobileMe account requires an iPhone or iPad (it is not available on the iPod touch).
When adding a friend, they have a generic icon in the Gallery list
The picture icon next to a friend's name is only available if you choose a contact from your contact list that has a picture associated with that contact. Your own Gallery, and others added by manually entering a membername, will have a generic icon. Friend's pictures will be updated if their contact pictures change on your device.
When adding a Friend from your Contact list, the correct member name doesn't appear (or the name of the person you are trying to add does not appear at all)
- If the contact you are adding has multiple MobileMe email addresses or chat addresses entered in your Address Book, only one will appear. You can manually add the desired Gallery by tapping Cancel and then entering the member name.
- If you don't see an expected contact, that contact does not have an email address or chat address that ends with either @me.com or @mac.com. Press the Home button, tap Contacts, and edit the desired contact to update it with the appropriate MobileMe member name for that user.
Not all of your albums appear when looking at My Gallery
- Verify all of your albums are available at www.me.com/gallery. If an album is not available there, it will not be available in the Gallery app.
- If your album is hidden, it will only appear if Show Hidden Albums is enabled. From the Galleries screen, tap Settings and then enable the option to Show Hidden Albums.
After deleting the Gallery app, when visiting a Gallery or album in Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you see the alert: "Cannot Open Page - Safari cannot open the page because the address is invalid"
This alert message should only appear once. If you refresh the page in Safari or visit any gallery or album going forward it should behave as expected. If you repeatedly receive this alert, you may need to Clear Cookies in Safari (from the Home screen, tap Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies).
Repeated username/password prompt when visiting a friend's password protected album
- If you tapped a link to a password protected album, Safari may first prompt you for the username and password, and then you will be redirected to the Gallery app that will prompt you again.
- If you entered the username/password incorrectly, the prompt will reappear. If you do not know the password, contact the member to ask for his or her album password (which is different from the MobileMe account password).
Password protected albums/movies appear to have generic icon
This issue will occur with any password-protected album or movie in a friend's gallery. A different icon may appear for a brief time after authenticating to view the album/movie but will then revert to the generic icon.
My albums or pictures in an album appear out of order in the Gallery app when viewing My Gallery
For more information, see MobileMe: Rearrangements of photos, movies, or albums done at me.com/gallery do not save or reflect in other devices or applications.
Friends are unable to load your hidden and password-protected album in the Gallery app
If your friends are trying to view your album that is hidden and password protected, it may not load successfully in the Gallery app. To resolve this issue:
- Delete the published album.
- Republish the album and password protected it, but do not hide it.
- After the album is published, log in to www.me.com/gallery and hide it.
- Send the new link to your album to your friends who were trying to view it before.
