Mac OS X Server v10.5, 10.6: iChat Service Start button missing from the Server Admin iChat Service configuration

Products Affected

Mac OS X Server 10.5, Mac OS X Server 10.6

Symptoms

When configuring the iChat service in Server admin, the Start button may not appear in the iChat service configuration window. Other settings in the iChat service are dimmed (grayed out) and not editable.

This can occur if the /Library/Preferences/ichatserver.plist file has been deleted or is problematic. If the com.apple.ichatserver.plist file is deleted a new default version of this plist will be created.

Resolution

  1. Execute the following Terminal command:
    sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Set :initialized true" /Library/Preferences/com.apple.ichatserver.plist
  2. Refresh the Server Admin view for the iChat service. The Start button should now appear and the service should be configurable.
