Motion 4: Images imported into Motion, exported, and then imported may appear too bright.
Symptoms
When importing an image file into a Motion project which was previously exported from Motion, the image may appear too pale or too bright.
Products Affected
Motion 4.0, Final Cut Studio (2009)
Resolution
To maintain compatibility across Final Cut Studio applications, Motion assumes that all imported still images are encoded with a gamma of 1/1.8. Motion 4 uses a working color space gamma correction of 1/2.2 and automatically corrects imported still images from the default 1/1.8 into the 1/2.2 gamma. When exporting an image, Motion 4 keeps the image in 1/2.2 gamma and correctly tags the image as 1/2.2.
When importing the resulting exported image back into Motion, it is necessary to change the default assumed gamma of the image from 1/1.8 to 1/2.2.
Change the assumed gamma setting of an image by selecting the image file in the project and choosing Window > Media or type Command-5 to access the Media tab in the project. Click the Inspector tab and then the Media tab within the inspector. Select "2.2" from the Gamma pop-up menu to set the gamma of the image in the project to 1/2.2.
