iPhone and iPod touch: Syncing not enabled error message after restoring from a backup

iPhone, iPod touch, iPod touch (2nd generation), iTunes 8 for Mac, iTunes 8 for Windows
Symptoms
After restoring from a backup:
- You may see one of these error messages when attempting to sync with your computer via USB:
- iTunes could not sync calendars to the iPod because calendars have been disabled on the iPod.
- iTunes could not sync contacts to the iPod because contacts have been disabled on the iPod.
- You may see that the sync options are not selected in iTunes.
Resolution
Update to iTunes 9 or later and iOS 3.1 or later. Backups created after updating will not experience this issue.
Additional Information
iOS 3.0 and later supports syncing from more than one source at a time; however, the backup will contain only the over-the-air settings if more than one source is synced.
