iPhone and iPod touch: Mail may unexpectedly quit if webmail account settings are synced

Products Affected

Mac OS, iPhone, iPod touch

This article has been archived and is no longer updated by Apple.

Symptoms

One or more of the following may occur:

  • Mail app unexpectedly quits when trying to access mail
    or
  • iPhone or iPod touch displays "Home" screen when trying to access mail
    or
  • Mail account on the iPhone or iPod touch shows blank account title/description in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars screen as shown here:

Resolution

This can happen if you have installed a third-party mail plug-in in Mac OS X that allows you to create or configure HTTP mail account(s) on your computer. You should not sync those mail settings using iTunes to your iPhone or iPod touch as the Mail app on your device does not support HTTP mail.

If the mail account has already been created on the device from your synced mail settings using iTunes, delete the mail account(s) from your device. You can identify the HTTP mail account(s) on your device by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and checking if there are blank/no title mail accounts listed (as shown above).

Check with your email provider to see if there is POP or iMAP access for the account. If there is a POP or IMAP option, re-create the account directly on the device using those settings. You could also remove the plug-in for Mac OS X Mail and configure Mail on your Mac to use the POP or IMAP settings.
