Power/Battery
Battery does not appear to charge
Important: iPod touch cannot be charged with a FireWire power adapter or FireWire-based car charger.
- Verify that the power source being used is working properly.
- If connecting to a computer's USB port, verify it is a high-powered USB 2.0 port. Note: The USB ports on most keyboards don't provide enough power, so if you're connecting iPod touch to a keyboard, make sure it has a high-powered USB 2.0 port.
- Verify the computer is turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPod touch is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPod touch battery may drain.
- Try another USB port.
- Try charging from a USB charger if available.
- If that does not help, try another USB cable if available.
- Learn more about charging the battery.
Battery life seems short
- Click (www.apple.com/batteries/ipods.html ) for tips on how to prolong iPod touch battery life.
- If the screen shows a low-battery image, iPod touch is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it.
- If you are charging using your computer, don't connect iPod touch to the keyboard, unless the keyboard has high-powered USB 2.0 ports.
- Verify that the computer is turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPod touch is connected to a computer that's not turned or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPod touch battery may drain.
- When charging the battery, leave it connected until it is fully charged.
- Try turning the iPod touch off and then on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPod touch for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
- Sync the iPod touch to iTunes and restore the iPod.
Will not power on
- Try charging the iPod touch for 10 minutes or more, by connecting the iPod to your computer (not your keyboard) using the included USB cable or to an Apple USB power adapter.
Note: iPod touch cannot be charged with a FireWire power adapter or FireWire-based car charger. If iPod touch is connected to a computer that’s turned off or in sleep or standby mode, the iPod touch battery may drain instead of charge.
Important: If iPod touch is very low on power, it may display one of the following low-battery images indicating that iPod touch needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it. If iPod touch is extremely low on power, the display may be blank for up to two minutes before one of the low-battery images appears.

- While connected to a power source, try to reset the iPod touch. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until either the Apple logo or battery symbol appears. If the battery symbol appears, continue to charge iPod touch until it is fully charged.
- If the iPod touch still doesn't power on, then restore in recovery mode.
- Finally, check to see if the Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) in the headphone jack is activated. Learn more about LCIs.
Display
Display image issues
This can include bright or dark pixels, lines in video, or sections of video missing.
- Try turning the iPod touch off and then on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPod touch for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
- View different content to verify that the issue is not content related.
- If the image is too dark, adjust the brightness. In General Settings choose Brightness and slide the slider.
Display does not go into wide-screen mode
- Open a web page or video and try turning iPod touch on its side to see if it goes into wide-screen mode.
- If that doesn't work, try another web page or video.
Note: Not all applications on iPod touch use wide-screen mode. Videos are automatically in wide-screen mode when in iPod and YouTube.
Display shows white screen
- Try turning the iPod touch off and then on again.
- If the iPod will not turn off, try to reset it. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until either the Apple logo or battery symbol appears. If the battery symbol appears, continue to charge iPod touch until it is fully charged.
- If that doesn't work, try restoring the iPod. See this article for assistance.
Display has no backlight or dark screen
- Try turning the iPod touch off and then on again.
- If the issue persists, try to reset the iPod touch while it is connected to power. To reset, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until either the Apple logo or battery symbol appears. If the battery symbol appears, continue to charge the device until it is fully charged.
Touchscreen not working
- Clean the screen with a microfiber polishing cloth.
- Do not wear gloves while using the touchscreen. Do not use the touchscreen with wet hands or immediately after applying hand lotion. Moisture affects touchscreen behavior in the same manner as it affects a trackpad.
- If you have a protective plastic sheet or film on the touchscreen, try removing it, because it may be preventing the touchscreen from working properly.
- The current application may be unresponsive; press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPod touch for a few seconds until a red slider appears. Then press and hold the Home button until the application quits.
- Try turning the iPod touch off and then on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of the device or few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
- If the device did not turn off, reset it. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for a least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

Audio
iPod touch (4th generation): No audio on FaceTime or video recording
- Verify that nothing is blocking the microphone (located on the back next to the main camera).
- If a protective case is used, try removing the device from the case.
- Try turning the iPod touch off and then on again.
iPod touch (4th generation): Sound is low or garbled coming from speaker
- Check the volume setting on your iPod touch. You can adjust the volume by pressing the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons.
- If the issue appears only with content created using the microphone (located on the back next to the main camera), make sure that nothing is blocking the microphone.
- If you are using a protective case, make sure it is not covering the speaker or microphone, or remove the protective case and try playing audio content through the speaker to see if the sound is better.
- If you have not removed the plastic display film used for protection during shipment, either ensure that the speaker or microphone is not covered, or remove the film completely.
- If the device is in a dock, remove it from the dock.
- Check that the speaker mesh cover is not clogged with lint or other debris.
- If the speaker or microphone appears to be clogged, please use a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush to clean it.
- Use the brush to carefully and gently brush the speaker and microphone.
- Brush away from the 30-pin Dock Connector to avoid getting any debris into the connector.
No sound through headphones*
- Verify that there's no debris in the headphone port.
- Plug and unplug the headphones. Reconnect headphones and verify the connector is pushed in all the way.
- Check the volume setting on your iPod touch.
- If you are trying to listen to music and cannot hear any audio, make sure that the music is not paused.
- Make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed on the computer that you are syncing the iPod touch with (songs purchased from the iTunes Store using earlier versions of iTunes won't play).
- Try another set of Apple headphones.
- Try a different song or video.
- Check other content, such as videos, to see if they exhibit the same audio issues.
No sound through internal speaker*
- Verify that the iPod touch is not set to pause.
- Verify that the volume is set appropriately.
- Verify that headphones are not attached to the headphone port.
- Verify that Bluetooth stereo headphones are not paired wirelessly.
- Try turning the iPod touch off and then on again.
Camera
iPod touch (4th generation): Camera does not function
- If you do not see the Camera on any of your Home screens (you may have more than one), check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tapping Settings > General > Restrictions. If they are, set Allow Camera to ON or tap Disable Restrictions. You can also use the search function to find the Camera app.
- Ensure that camera lens (the main lens or the front lens) is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the main camera lens or the display glass covering the front camera.
- Third-party cases can interfere with the autofocus/exposure feature; try removing the case if you have image-quality issues with photos.
- Try turning the iPod touch off and then on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of the device for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
- iPod touch (4th generation) camera has a fixed focus, so verify the picture is in focus before taking the photo. Moving toward or away from the object may help with focus.
- You can tap the screen to set the exposure. This will help with picture clarity.
- If the issue is with the main camera, try using the front camera to see if the issue persists, or try using the main camera if the issue is with the front camera.

* Avoiding Hearing Damage
Permanent hearing loss may occur if the receiver, earbuds, headphones, speakerphone, or earpieces are used at high volume. Set the volume to a safe level. You can adapt over time to a higher volume of sound that may sound normal but can be damaging to your hearing. If you experience ringing in your ears or muffled speech, stop listening and have your hearing checked. The louder the volume, the less time is required before your hearing could be affected. Hearing experts suggest that to protect your hearing:
- Limit the amount of time you use the receiver, earbuds, headphones, speakerphone, or earpieces at high volume.
- Avoid turning up the volume to block out noisy surroundings.
- Turn the volume down if you can't hear people speaking near you.
For information about how to set a maximum volume limit on iPod touch, see the iPod touch User Guide.
