Mac OS X Server version 10.5: Windows XP 64-bit clients may experience blue screen or hang when saving files to SMB shares

Products Affected

Mac OS X Server 10.5, Windows XP

Symptoms

When a Windows XP 64-bit-based client saves files to an SMB share that is hosted by Mac OS X Server version 10.5 or later, the client may encounter a blue screen or may stop responding ("hang"). Afterwards, the SMB share may contain a small file with the same name as the file that was being saved.

Resolution

  1. In the /etc/smb.conf file, under the "Site-specific parameters" section, add the following lines to the end file:

    [global] "change notify = no"

  2. Save the changes
  3. Restart the SMB service

Additional Information

The "change notify" parameter controls the immediate update of file status to Windows Explorer. Setting this value to "no" may present a slight delay in file status updates that appear in Windows Explorer.
