Mac OS X v10.5.6: Battery menu does not display Energy Saver options

Products Affected

Mac OS X 10.5.6, Portable Computers

Symptoms

Portable Mac computers (introduced before Late 2008 models) have sets of custom and pre-defined energy settings in the Energy Saver System Preferences pane. These settings cannot be changed from the battery status icon on the menu bar after updating to Mac OS X v10.5.6.

Resolution

The Optimization pop-up menu has settings for Better Battery Life, Normal, Better Performance, or Custom.  Follow these steps to change the energy settings on your portable Mac (introduced before Late 2008 models) with Mac OS X v10.5.6.

  • Choose Energy Saver Preferences from the battery menu.
  • Select the desired setting from the Optimization pop-up menu.

Alternatively, download and install the Mac OS X v10.5.7 update to restore the pre-defined energy settings to the battery status icon on the menu bar.
