Symptoms

If your MobileMe password is longer than 20 characters, you cannot log in to iChat in Mac OS X 10.4. You will receive the following alert if you attempt to enter a long password in iChat preferences:

.Mac password is too long
You may not be able to log in if your .Mac password is longer than 20 characters. Would you like to open the .Mac website to change it? This can be changed from the Account section after you log in.

Resolution

Change your MobileMe password so it has 20 or less characters. You can change your password in the Account section of the MobileMe website (http://www.me.com/) -- click Password Settings on the left to enter a new password.

After changing your password, update your iChat Preferences:

  1. Open iChat.
  2. Choose Preferences from the iChat menu.
  3. Click the Account icon.
  4. Select your MobileMe account and then enter your new password.
  5. Close the Preferences window.
