iTunes is unable to activate your iPhone because of an issue reading the SIM card

Symptoms
An activated iPhone may unexpectedly display the "connect to iTunes screen" along with one or more of the following symptoms:
- iTunes 8.0.2 and later displays the following message when you connect iPhone to the computer:
"iTunes cannot activate your iPhone because the SIM card is not inserted or a SIM PIN is required."

- iTunes 8.0.1 and earlier displays the following message when you connect iPhone to the computer:
"The iPhone 'iPhone' cannot be used with iTunes because the information required for activation could not be obtained from the iPhone."

Resolution
Verify that your SIM card is inserted and if you use a SIM PIN, enter it on your iPhone. See article HT1316 for information on locating the SIM PIN.
Note: You may need to also disconnect then reconnect iPhone.
