MobileMe Mail: May be unable to send some files as attachments

Products Affected

MobileMe, MobileMe Mail

Symptoms

MobileMe Mail allows MobileMe members to send and receive email from just about any computer with a web browser and Internet connection. MobileMe Mail can also send attachments along with an email.

However, some files may not attach properly when you try to send them via MobileMe Mail. After you click the paperclip icon in the Compose window and try to choose an attachment, you may see the following alert:

"Unsupported file format. Mail does not support attachments in pages format. Please try compressing the file into a zip archive and attaching the archive to the message."

Resolution

This can happen when trying to attach package files, which are created by applications such as Pages, GarageBand, iMovie, iDVD and Keynote. This issue may occur with other file types as well.

If you cannot attach your file, follow these steps to compress the file:

Mac OS X

  1. In the Finder, select the file you want to send.
  2. From the File menu, choose Compress (Mac OS X v10.5 and v10.6.x), or Create Archive (Mac OS X v10.4). A new file with the same name is created (ending with ".zip").
  3. Go back to your email application.
  4. Select the new .zip file and attach it to the email instead of the original file.

Windows

  1. In the Windows Explorer, select the file you want to send.
  2. Right-click on the file and choose Send To Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  3. Go back to your email program.
  4. Select the file that is created (it has the same name as the original file but the name ends ".zip") and attach that file to the email instead.
