Cannot connect to remote Xserve using ipmitool after installing ARD Admin 3.2.2

Symptoms

The ipmitool command may be used on an administrative computer running Mac OS X 10.5.5 to connect to a remote Intel-based Xserve running Mac OS X Server 10.5. After installing the Apple Remote Desktop 3.2 or 3.2.2 Admin Update on the administrative computer, the ipmitool command may no longer work.

Products Affected

Xserve (Late 2006), Apple Remote Desktop 3.X, Xserve (Early 2008)

Resolution

Download and install the latest Combo Update for Mac OS X 10.5 or Mac OS X Server 10.5, available from Apple Support Downloads. This will restore the ipmitool command to the correct version.

Additional Information

As an alternative to installing the most recent Combo Update, if the target Xserve does not have Apple Remote Desktop Admin installed and it is running Mac OS X Server 10.5.5 or later, you can copy/usr/bin/ipmitool from the server to the administrative computer. Confirm that the version of ipmitool is version 2.0.2 (or later) by running "/usr/bin/ipmitool -V" in Terminal before copying.
