AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet): Stops Working When Used With Bonjour

  • Last Modified: September 08, 2008

Symptoms

Installing firmware version 4.0.6 or later corrects a situation in which use of Bonjour (formerly "Rendezvous") disables an AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet). Bonjour is a feature introduced with Mac OS X 10.2 for the automatic detection of local network services, such as printers, iChat, and various types of sharing.

  • An AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet) stops operating when used with Bonjour applications, and computers lose connection with the AirPort network.
  • Restarting the base station, by disconnecting and reconnecting the power adapter, temporarily corrects the issue.
  • The AirPort Admin Utility may stop responding and need to be force quit if scanning for base stations that are engaged in Bonjour communication.

Products Affected

AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet), Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.3, Mac OS X 10.2, Bonjour, Mac OS X 10.5

Resolution

The AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet) requires firmware version 4.0.6 or later to be compatible with Bonjour applications. AirPort version 2.1, included with Mac OS X 10.2 (see Note), updates the base station to 4.0.6 firmware. Follow these steps:

    1. Disconnect the base station power adapter, from either the base station or the electrical outlet, for a few seconds.
    2. Reconnect the power adapter, and wait about 30 seconds for the lights on the base station to finish the startup sequence.
    3. At a Mac OS X 10.2 computer, open AirPort Admin Utility (/Applications/Utilities/).
    4. Connect to the affected base station.
    5. Upon connection, you should be prompted to update the base station software. Choose to update it.

Note:  If you do not have easy access to a Mac OS X 10.2 computer, you may download the 4.0.7 firmware update separately. The firmware and instructions for using it may be found in software download document 120140, "AirPort 4.0.7 Firmware Update: Information and Download".
