Mac OS X 10.1: Using a PowerBook With Display Closed

Symptoms

If you connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to a PowerBook computer that is in sleep mode and leave the display closed, when you wake the computer it wakes for a few seconds and then immediately goes back to sleep.

Resolution

Download and install Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later. It is available from the Software Updates pane of System Preferences, or from the Apple Software Downloads Web site (http://www.apple.com/swupdates/). With Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later you can use an external display while the PowerBook display is closed by following these steps:


    1. Put the PowerBook to sleep by closing the display.

    2. Connect an external display and keyboard.

    3. Press a key on the external keyboard.


Note

: The AC adapter must be connected or the PowerBook will immediately go back to sleep.
