Speech Recognition is not available for Panther limited users or managed clients

Symptoms

When you use the either Limitations feature of System Preferences or Workgroup Manager to allow only specific applications, the limited user will see a blank Speech Recognition window in the Speech preference pane.

This occurs with Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server versions 10.3 and later.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, add these four items to the allowed list:

  • /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/SpeechRecognition.framework/Resources/Speech Startup.app
  • /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/SpeechRecognition.framework/Resources/SpeechFeedbackWindow.app
  • /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/SpeechRecognition.framework/Resources/SpeechRecognitionServer.app
  • /System/Library/Speech/Recognizers/AppleSpeakableItems.SpeechRecognizer/Contents/Resources/SpeakableItems.app
