GarageBand: Real Instruments sometimes can't be heard while recording

Symptoms

When you record Real Instruments into GarageBand, sometimes there is no sound, or the sound level is too low, to record well.

Products Affected

GarageBand, Real Instruments

Resolution

This issue arises from a mismatch in levels. Most computers have line level inputs. Such inputs are designed to accept signals that have been pre-amplified. Run the instrument or mic through a pre-amp, and connect the line-level output of the pre-amp to the computer audio input. Alternatively, there are many FireWire or USB audio interfaces that offer built-in pre-amps.
