Symptoms

In most cases, you do not need to install Apple Display Software if Mac OS X is already installed on your computer. Doing so may cause the computer to start up to a blue screen or gray screen.

The computer restarts to a blue screen or gray screen after installing Apple Display Software. Occasionally, the screen may flash.

Products Affected

Mac OS X 10.1, PowerBook G4 (DVI), PowerBook G4 (12-inch DVI), Apple Studio Display 17" LCD, Apple Studio Display 17" ADC, Apple Studio Display 15" ADC, Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002ED), Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002), Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors), Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Door 2003), Power Mac G4 (FW 800), Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio), Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver), Power Mac G4 (Cube), Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet), Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics), Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics), Apple Studio Display LCD (15")

Resolution

Follow these steps if you installed the Apple Display Software included with your display, and are experiencing the symptom described above:

    1. Start up the computer from the Mac OS X Install CD. See Note 1.
    2. Reinstall Mac OS X. See Notes 1 and 2.
    3. Do not install the Apple Displays Software version 2.1 or 2.1.1 for Mac OS X. You may want to discard the Apple Display Software CD that came with your display.
    4. Verify that the computer starts up correctly ("boots to desktop").
    5. If the symptom continues, contact Apple.

Notes

    1. If you have a PowerBook G4 (DVI) computer, you may need to reset the NVRAM before reinstalling Mac OS X. For instructions, see PowerBook: Resetting Power Manager.
    2. If you are reinstalling Mac OS X 10.2 you can use the Archive and Install feature to preserve user and network settings.
