iMovie ’08: Pixelated & choppy preview on Sony DCR-SR100 MPEG-2 camera

Symptoms

When importing video from a Sony DCR-SR100 MPEG-2 camera, selecting a clip and clicking play from the Import window may display the video with distortion or video artifacts.

Resolution

This only occurs while previewing the video. Once you get the video into an iMovie ’08 project the video will appear normal.
