Final Cut Pro: Aspect ratio of imported images is sometimes displays incorrectly

Products Affected

Final Cut Pro 5.X, Final Cut Pro 6.0

Symptoms

When you import a still image into a Final Cut Pro project, the image sometimes displays at an incorrect aspect ratio.

Resolution

When you import a still image to a Final Cut Pro project, Final Cut Pro may automatically assign a pixel aspect ratio if the still image is a standard video pixel size.

For example, if you import a 1440x1080 image, Final Cut may assign an HD(1440x1080) aspect ratio. If this happens, follow these steps:

  1. Add the image to your project's browser.
  2. Control-click the image and choose Item Properties > Format...
  3. In the Item Properties window, locate Pixel Aspect in the first column, and control-click the current setting in the second column.
  4. Choose "Square" from the menu.
  5. Click OK to dismiss the Item Properties window.
  6. Add the still image to your sequence.
