What to do when Windows displays a blue screen error message or restarts when syncing the iPhone or iPod touch
Symptoms
An error message may appear on a blue screen when syncing a Microsoft Windows-compatible computer (XP or Vista) and an iPhone or iPod touch with saved photos (taken with the iPhone camera or saved from Safari or Mail). This issue can also occur due to a USB driver conflict with another device connected to the computer.
Products Affected
iPhone, iTunes 7 for Windows, iPod touch, iPod touch 32GB/64GB (Late 2009), iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, Windows 7, iTunes 9 for Windows, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows OS, iTunes 8 for Windows, iPod touch (2nd generation), Windows XP, Windows Vista
Resolution
Solution 1
Outdated software drivers on your computer can cause strange behaviors when syncing the computer with your iPhone or iPod touch. While any driver software could be a factor, updating the software drivers for Logitech QuickCam/Webcam products, Lexmark scanners, and some built-in media card reader drivers on the computer may solve this issue in a majority of cases. Refer to article HT1768 for additional assistance with updating drivers. Once you have updated the drivers, you should be able to sync the photos taken on the iPhone or saved on iPod touch.
If you have Logitech's QuickCam software installed on your computer, refer to Logitech's troubleshooting article as a possible solution "iPhone/iPod touch and QuickCam crash Windows when syncing".
If you are using Windows Vista, make sure you install the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) or later.
Solution 2
Isolate the issue to see if there is a USB conflict by disconnecting other USB devices connected to the computer such as a printer, digital camera, scanner, etc.
Solution 3
Try connecting the iPhone or iPod touch to a different USB port or connect directly to the PC if using an external USB hub.
