iPod classic or iPod nano (3rd generation) randomly resetting or freezing when displaying album artwork
Symptoms
iPod classic or iPod nano (3rd generation) may randomly freeze or reset when the album artwork previews appear during menu navigation.
Products Affected
iPod classic, iPod nano (3rd generation)
Resolution
- If iPod is frozen or unresponsive, try resetting.
- Update the iPod classic or iPod nano (3rd generation) to version 1.0.1 or later using iTunes 7. See this document for update steps.
If the update does not resolve the issue, you can use the workaround in Option A below to turn off album artwork for songs, or you can try and isolate which song(s) are causing the issue under Option B.
Option A: Turn off album artwork
- Connect iPod to the computer and open iTunes.
- Select iPod under Devices on the left side of the iTunes window.
- Click the Music tab and uncheck the "Display album artwork on your iPod" checkbox.
- Click Apply.
Option B: Isolate affected song(s)
Try syncing a smaller numbers of songs to iPod and, by process of elimination, find the song/album artwork that is causing the issue. After syncing the smaller group of songs, eject iPod and see if the issue still occurs. If the issue doesn't occur, continue syncing additional songs to try and re-create the issue.
If the issue recurs, you know it was in the last group of songs you added. Try deleting and re-adding the artwork to those songs or albums. To delete artwork:
- Select the song in iTunes.
- Choose File > Get Info.
- Click Artwork.
- Select the artwork and click Delete.
When adding artwork back, you may want to try using a different source for the artwork because the source file could be corrupted.
