iPod not recognized correctly on Toshiba laptop
Symptoms
If you have a Toshiba portable computer and connect any iPod model to it using USB, you may experience any of the following issues:
- iTunes for Windows doesn't recognize your iPod.
- Windows and iPod Updater recognize your iPod, but you get an error when you try to update or restore the iPod:
"Firmware update failure, Disk write error"

Resolution
If you encounter any of these issues, try the following steps to get your iPod working again. Important: Do not follow the steps in this article if you are using a desktop computer with only a USB keyboard and mouse. This may completely disable USB access and cause you to be unable to use Windows after restarting.
- Quit iTunes.
- On the Start menu, right-click on My Computer.
- From the shortcut menu, click Manage.
- Click Device Manager.
- Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click on any item labeled "USB 2.0," "enhanced," or "high speed," and from the shortcut menu, click Disable. Repeat for all other high-speed USB items.
- Restart the computer.
- Open iTunes.
- Restore your iPod.
Re-enable high-speed interfaces
After restoring your iPod, you may want to re-enable your high-speed USB interfaces. This greatly increases the speed at which files are sent to iPod. If you run into any issues after re-enabling your computer's high-speed USB interfaces, you may need to disable them again.
To re-enable your computer's high-speed USB interfaces:
- Open Device Manager and re-enable the options you disabled in step 6, above.
- Restart your computer.
- Open iTunes.
