Symptoms

This document is for Windows XP. Click the appropriate link below if you have a different operating system.
Windows Vista     Mac OS X

When the iPhone or iPod touch is connected to Windows XP, a dialog is presented with choices for connecting as a digital camera and working with the digital pictures stored on the device.

This is the default behavior under Windows XP for digital imaging devices. Windows provides a way to disable this notification on a per-device basis.

Products Affected

iPhone, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPod touch (2nd generation), Windows XP

Resolution

To disable this notification:

  1. Connect iPhone or iPod touch to the Windows XP computer.
  2. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, open Printers and Other Hardware (if the Control Panel is in Classic View, skip to the next step).
  4. Open Scanners and Cameras.
  5. In the Scanners and Cameras window, right-click on the Apple iPhone or Apple iPod touch and choose Properties.
  6. Click the Events tab.
  7. On the Select an event pop-up menu, choose Camera Connected and then select "Take no action" in the Actions area.

  8. Click OK.

Additional Information

This will disable the automatic notification that a digital imaging device has been connected each time the device is connected to the computer. It will not prevent photos from syncing with the computer. You can re-enable the Scanner and Camera Wizard at any time by returning to this Control Panel and choosing the desired action for the "Start this program" option.
