Mac OS X 10.5: "The text entered does not appear to be a recognized URL format" alert when connecting to server or Time Machine

Products Affected

Mac OS X 10.5, Time Machine

Symptoms

An alert stating "The text entered does not appear to be a recognized URL format" may appear when attempting to connect to a server in the Finder (via Go > Connect to Server).

This can happen when:

  • using Mac OS X 10.5 with a user account that was migrated from Mac OS X 10.4
    or
  • when data from a Time Capsule-based Time Machine backup has been migrated from another Mac

Resolution

  1. In the Finder, double-click on your hard disk.
  2. Open the folder named System.
  3. Open the Library folder.
  4. Open the Filesystems folder.
  5. Drag the folder named "URLMount (from old Mac)" to your desktop as a precautionary backup.
  6. Once the copy is complete, control-click the original "URLMount (from old Mac)" folder (not the one on your desktop) and choose "Move to Trash" from the contextual menu.
  7. Enter the name and password of an administrator if prompted. The first user account created on your Mac is an administrator account.
  8. Restart.
