MobileMe and Apple ID password requirements and supported characters

Products Affected

MobileMe

Symptoms

When trying to change your password, MobileMe will advise you that "Your password is invalid" and you will be unable to save the password.

Resolution

First, be sure that your password conforms to the following password requirements:

  • Must be a minimum of 8 characters in length
  • Must contain at least 1 number
  • Must contain at least one letter
  • Must contain at least one capital letter
  • Must not contain three consecutive identical characters
  • Must not have been used in the past year
  • Must not be the same as your account name

Then, check that you are only using characters that are supported by Apple's servers when you create a new password (see the chart below). However, do not use an ampersand (&) and semicolon (;) together. This combination will prevent a successful password change.

Note: It's a good idea to use a combination of character types so that your password will be more secure
