From time to time, publishing to MobileMe from iWeb may result in alert messages such as the following:

  • "An error occurred while publishing file '/Web/Sites/Sites.rss"
  • "Publish error: An unknown error occurred"

Resolution

If you encounter an issue while publishing to MobileMe from iWeb try the following:

  1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iWeb. Use Software Update to see if new software is available for your computer.
  2. Ensure your MobileMe account credentials are correct by checking MobileMe preferences, in System Preferences, on your Mac.
  3. Check to see that your MobileMe subscription is up to date by signing in to www.me.com.
  4. Occasionally, network timeouts can cause issues when you publish to MobileMe from iWeb. If you have been able to publish successfully in the past, and if there have been no changes to your computer or Internet connection, wait a few minutes and then try publishing again.
  5. MobileMe passwords longer than 20 characters may cause publishing issues with certain pages in iWeb. If your MobileMe password is longer than 20 characters, go to http://www.me.com/account and log in with your MobileMe member name and current password. Click Password Settings, enter your new password twice, and click Submit. Enter your new password in the MobileMe preferences in System Preferences, and try publishing again.
  6. Try republishing your entire site. To republish all pages to MobileMe, choose Publish All to MobileMe from the iWeb File menu.
  7. As with your own MobileMe password, there are some types of passwords and user names that can cause issues when used with a password-protected website. If you create a password-protected site and get alert messages when publishing, disable password-protection and then republish. If you still receive error messages, make sure your site's password and user name meet the criteria described in this article.
  8. If you can connect to your iDisk, try to publish a single blank page to test your MobileMe account. If this works, content on a specific webpage or in the master domain file of your website may be preventing a successful publish.
    • If you already have an iWeb page built, use a new Domain file to publish a blank page. This article shows how to back up the Domain file; after backing up, you can delete it, open iWeb, and publish a blank page as a test.
    • Alternatively, create a new user account in Accounts preferences (in System Preferences), and log in with that account. Open iWeb and publish a blank page.

  9. If proxies, security applications, and web filters are disabled and a blank page publish does not work, try publishing to a folder by choosing File > Publish to Folder. If this is successful, iWeb is functioning as expected.  There may be an issue publishing to the web-hosting portion of MobileMe.  In this case, contact MobileMe Support.
  10. If you are able to publish to a folder, try copying that folder to your iDisk. To access your iDisk, go to the Finder, and from the Go menu, choose iDisk > My iDisk. After the iDisk mounts on your desktop, copy the folder from your hard disk to the Documents folder in your iDisk. If copying the folder to your iDisk is successful, you can safely delete the folder from your iDisk, as copying it was simply a test to verify that basic connectivity to your iDisk is working as expected. If you receive an error message when copying the folder to the iDisk, you are most likely experiencing a network-related issue. For assistance, see the Network Troubleshooting section below.
  11. If you have a proxy server, web filter, or security programs running, disable them. These programs may prevent the necessary access to the MobileMe servers that host your content and accept your publish transmission. You can also test connecting directly to your MobileMe iDisk with instructions from this article.

Network troubleshooting

Some iWeb publishing issues may be due to network-specific issues.

  • Try disabling any firewall, proxy servers, or network filtering software you may be using. (Apple can't provide specific configuration or setup information for your proxy server or firewall to allow MobileMe publishing, as ports, IP addresses, and other information may change over time.)
  • Next, simplify your Internet connection. For example, if you connect through multiple networking devices, such as hubs and routers, try connecting your computer directly to your modem and test to see if the issue occurs. If it does not, troubleshoot your networking devices one at a time.
  • Verify your network connectivity and settings. You may wish to contact your Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance. For other information about troubleshooting network connectivity, see this article.
  • Another way to verify whether the issue is caused by your local network or not is to attempt to publish to MobileMe from iWeb while connected to another network, such as one at an Apple Store if possible. Find a store here and click the link to make a reservation at the Genius Bar. There may be a fee associated with the visit.
  • If you can publish to MobileMe in iWeb from another network successfully, then you have isolated the issue to your own network or Internet connection.

Following the suggestions above may help you determine if the issue is with your network connection, attributes in your web page or website domain file, or your MobileMe account. If the issues are related to your MobileMe account, please contact MobileMe Support.
