MobileMe: Mail messages do not appear, or "disappear" while looking at them

Symptoms

  • New email messages that you're expecting may not appear in your Inbox even though you can successfully connect to the server
    or
  • You see new messages but they seem to "disappear" from your Inbox while you are looking at them, or after a short period of time

Messages in other mailboxes, such as Sent Messages and Deleted Items, are not affected.

Resolution

This may occur if you have a different email application configured to check your account via Post Office Protocol3 (POP3, or just POP)--your mail may be getting downloaded to another location and removed from the server. POP3 is often the default protocol for many mail applications; messages might be getting removed immediately from the server after being downloaded to the email client, depending on how it is configured.

To locate your message(s), examine the Inbox contents of all email applications that access your email account. Once you find the messages, you could forward them to your own email address so that they can be accessed again.

Additional Information

To prevent this from occurring in the future, limit your use of the account to only one email client application (or do not use POP). If this isn't feasible, enable the option to leave a copy of all messages on the server in the account settings, so that the messages will be available to all clients.

Another option is to configure all clients with Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP). IMAP by default leaves all messages on the server.
