Movie rentals on iPod nano or iPod classic display "Reconnect to iTunes" after updating iPod software

Symptoms

After updating iPod nano (3rd generation) or iPod classic to iPod software version 1.1.2, movie rentals that were already on the iPod may be unplayable and may show a message saying "Reconnect to iTunes".

Resolution

To resolve this issue, transfer the movie to iTunes and then move it back to the iPod. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Connect iPod nano (3rd generation) or iPod classic to your computer.
  2. Open iTunes.
  3. Click the iPod on the left hand side of the iTunes window, below Devices.
  4. Select the Movies tab shown below.
  5. Locate the rented movie in the "On iPod" list show below and click "Move".
  6. Click "Apply" in the lower right hand corner of iTunes to transfer the rental back to iTunes.
  7. After this transfer completes, locate the rented movie in the "In your iTunes library" list shown below and click "Move".
  8. Click "Apply" in the lower right hand corner of iTunes to transfer the rental back to your iPod.
  9. After the transfer completes, eject the iPod and the movie will be playable.
