Apple Wireless Keyboard: Difficulty during pairing process

Symptoms

When pairing an Apple Wireless Keyboard (via Bluetooth Setup Assistant):

  • A message may appear stating that the pairing attempt was unsuccessful
    or
  • You may receive a message that the computer was unable to pair with the keyboard

Resolution

This could occur if keys are pressed on the Apple Wireless Keyboard before the PIN code has been entered during pairing in Bluetooth Setup Assistant.  

To resolve this issue:

  1. Turn the Apple Wireless Keyboard off. 

    • For an aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard, hold the keyboard's power button for more than 3 seconds.
    • For a white Apple Wireless Keyboard, turn the power switch to the off position.

  2. Quit Bluetooth Setup Assistant, if it's running.
  3. Power the Apple Wireless Keyboard back on
  4. Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant if it doesn't open automatically.
