GarageBand: No input active after unplugging external audio interface

Symptoms

When an external FireWire or USB audio interface is disconnected while GarageBand is running, a dialog offering to switch to built-in audio appears. After you select built-in audio, attempts to record result in an error "No audio track is enabled for recording."

Resolution

Choose GarageBand > Preferences and click the Audio/MIDI pane. Choose Built-in Line Input from the Audio Input pop-up menu.
